Death of a friend
I met Brian Murray in the mid 1990s when I was seconded from the IT Services department at St Andrews to the University Library to look after their expanding numbers of PCs used by both staff and students.
Brian was one of the full-time book shelvers and he and I would sit together at coffee break time in the staff room in the library basement. He always had a plastic box with sandwiches, one of which he would have with his coffee to keep him going until lunchtime. On Fridays we would often go along to one of the pubs on The Scores for a pint of beer and a bowl of chips.
I don't know how long he had been working at the Library but I'm fairly sure he had worked elsewhere earlier in his working life, possibly in the armed forces.
Libraries often employ more women than men and this was certainly true of the university library back in the 90s. I think Brian was pleased to find another bloke to chat to, albeit someone a good 20 years younger than he was. The job of a shelver was quite a solitary occupation, pushing your trolley round the quiet floors of the library. Most shelvers worked part-time, some of them being students, and Brian might well have been the only full-timer.
I would occasionally bump into him coming out of the lift as I was one of the few other members of staff who had access to the lifts, though for me it was moving computer equipment around the building rather than books.
When I left the university in 2002 Brian can't have been far off retirement. He was the only person in the library who I kept in touch with - we sent Christmas cards to each other every year with the usual brief messages with bits of news. I was saddened to hear that his wife Jean passed away a couple of years back. I never met her but he always spoke of her with affection. I suspect she made the sandwiches for him every morning and would have his tea waiting for him when he got home after a hard day of shelving books.
I posted a card to him just a few days ago but something told me that I might not get one back this year. I did a search on him today and found that he had indeed passed away in the summer.
It was a pleasure knowing you Brian. You were a real gent. RIP.

Recommended Releases 2025
It's time to do my usual round-up of folk, acoustic and roots music released this year by artists who I have played on my Off The Beaten Tracks show on Ginger Feather FM. For a change I've done a Top Five favourites followed by ten more recommended releases.
As for live music, highlights have included The Young 'Uns and SykesMartin at the Victoria Hall in Settle and Chris Wood at the village hall in Ulpha. I was at the Warwick Folk Festival in July and heard excellent sets from Richard Thompson, Granny's Attic, Banter, Benji Kirkpatrick and Fara.
In these post-Covid days, online gigs are still very much a thing with Folkscape and Live To Your Living Room broadcasting various acts from venues up and down the country. Best live-streamed gig of the year for me was Daphne's Flight. Sadly it was their farewell tour.
Thanks as ever to Citizen K for keeping things going at Ginger Feather FM and to the promoters who have sent me occasional promo copies of new releases. And thanks to you out there for tuning in to GF FM or listening on Mixcloud and reading what I post on this blog.
So my Top 5 of 2025 is...
Daphne's Flight - Favourable Light
Piers Faccini & Ballaké Sissoko - Our Calling
I’m With Her - Wild and Clear and Blue
Alison Krauss & Union Station - Arcadia
Iona Lane - Swilkie
...and 10 more Recommended Releases

Danny Thompson tribute show
Last month we lost one of the great characters of British jazz and folk music namely Danny Thompson, best known for having been in the late 60s band Pentangle and for his collaborations with John Martyn and Richard Thompson. He played double bass on a mind-blowing number of albums and this show includes some favourites of mine along with tracks from one or two albums which I have only recently discovered by Eric Bibb and Ralph McTell.
I saw Danny about half a dozen times as a member of Richard Thompson's band, sometimes just the two of them, other times with drummers Dave Mattacks or Michael Jerome and the multi-instrumentalist Pete Zorn.
So farewell Danny and thanks for all the music played on the instrument described in the sleeve notes to Ian McNabb's 1998 ...Emotional Party album as "circa 1860 Grand French swell-backed double bass 'Victoria'".

Blues mix for Max Haymes
I first met Max when I got involved with the community radio station Diversity FM. Max did his show on a Monday afternoon and occasionally I would cover for a guy called Reza whose show preceded Max's. I would normally end my hour with a blues track knowing that Max would be in the other studio waiting to take to the airwaves and I would listen to see what comment he would make. But while Max's expertise and love of the blues was the music of the early 20th century, I was more into guitarists who I had discovered in the 1980s like Robert Cray and those who to me were the older generation like BB King and Buddy Guy.
This mix features old blues which hopefully Max would have approved of from the likes of Big Bill Broonzy and Oscar Woods up to the new generation of blues musicians like Jackie Venson and Errol Brown. Listen on Mixcloud to my Blues Mix for Max.
Thanks Max, for giving me a window into a world of early blues which I may not have got round to checking out. Rest in Peace.
John Lee Hooker - Boom Boom
Big Bill Broonzy - Mindin' My Own Business
Sonny Boy Williamson - Sugar Mama
Jackie Venson - Down By The Riverside / Up Above My Head

One More Card
No more birthday cards to buy, no more Mother's Days to remember
One less Christmas card to send, no going shopping for presents
She liked her long hot baths so bubble bath or bath salts
Were guaranteed to bring a smile to her face
One time I bought her a cd of a singer from long ago
My aunt told me that mum had been a fan way back when
But when she unwrapped the disc there was a look
Of puzzlement, of disappointment.
I said, "your sister told me you'd really liked his music"
"Oh did she", replied mum. The cd was gone the next time I was home.
The care home had kept all the cards I'd sent her over the years
They gave me them back. Odd to see them again.
Birthdays, Xmas, Easter, Mothering Sunday, a postcard from Shetland
And a few cards just sent to say hello, I'm thinking of you.
She's gone now. End of life care led to the inevitable end of her life.
Will I see you in heaven? sing the Jayhawks. I don't know.
I miss her. Can I buy her just one more card? Please?
But others buy With Sympathy cards and send them to me.

A Mournful Ditty
A poem written by my grandfather William "Jock" Kay and included in his book Kay-otic Rhymes which was published in 1938. He lived in Hong Kong from 1913 until 1939, working as a school teacher and then Headmaster at Ellis Kadoorie School for Chinese Boys before moving on to be Headmaster at King's College.
It was said of him, "Jock Kay had a lively wit and a prolific pen: he may not have been a great poet, but he excelled as a parodist and in humorous, though friendly, satire."
I read this poem at my mother's funeral in Edinburgh on Tuesday the 3rd June 2025.
