Beyond Radio playlist 27 April

Some notes to accompany last night's Folk & Acoustic Music Show on Beyond Radio. Tune in on Thursdays at 8pm on 103.5FM in the Morecambe Bay area or listen online.

George Harrison - My Sweet Lord (demo)

From the 2001 album 'Early Takes Vol 1' this recording features Ringo Starr on drums and Klaus Voormann on bass.

Eleanor Bennett & Matt Appleton - Impossible Flame

A song written by Paul Walmsley for the film Tapestry

Drew Holcomb & The Neighbours - Mama’s Sunshine, Daddy’s Rain

A track from 'Souvenir', the new release by Drew and his band which is described as "a highly-collaborative album that finds Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors focusing on the things that truly stick with you, including family and friends, music and memories, people and places, in a fast-moving world."

Birds of Chicago - Sans Souci

Some Cajun influences on this number from Birds of Chicago's self titled 2013 album. Sans Souci includes harmony vocals from Awna Teixeira.

Moonlight Gazette - Souk

Andy Hornby and Howard Haigh have just released this album of instrumental pieces with flavours of music from around the world including Flamenco, Latino, Middle Eastern, blues and folk music. You can download the album from https://moonlightgazette.bandcamp.com/releases

Tom Waits - (Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night

The title track from Tom's 1974 album, this song was supposedly written as a tribute to Jack Kerouac - well, that's what it says on Wikipedia so it must be true!

Cara Dillon - She's Like The Swallow

A traditional number from Cara's debut 2001 solo album which won her two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. She is married to Sam Lakeman who plays keyboards and guitar on her albums as well as producing them, versatile chap that he is. I have seen her a number of times in concert including a couple of gigs at the Platform in Morecambe but sadly on her last visit their tour bus was vandalised. She hasn't been back since and prefers to play in Kendal. Their gain is our loss.

Michael Chapman - Rockport Sunday

Celebrating 50 years in the music business and having recently made an appearance on Later with Jools Holland I thought I'd play one of my favourite instrumental pieces by Michael, this one from his album 'Sweet Powder'.

Nick Keir - Norman's Dram

Nick was a well-known figure on the Edinburgh folk scene for many years and was a member of The McCalmans. Sadly he was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 and died the following year. This song is from his final album which was titled 'The Edge of Night'.

The Be Good Tanyas - When Doves Cry

According to Wikipedia the Tanyas are still active but haven't released any new material since 2006. This, as you probably guessed, is a cover of the song by Prince.

Megson - The Handloom Weaver & The Factory Maid

Stu and Debbie Hannah are Megson and this is a lively version of the trad folk song about a weaver & a factory maid. The lyrics include the lines "My father to me scornful said, How could you fancy a factory maid?" You get the idea what it's about.

Rab Noakes & Barbara Dickson - Que Sera Sera

Another couple of musicians who, like Mr Chapman, have been around since the late 60s. As well as releasing a fair few albums over the years, Rab has also worked as senior producer for music programmes on BBC Radio Scotland and after doing that he ran his own production company. This song is from 2014's 'Reunited' with his old pal Barbara Dickson.

Pierre Bensusan - Fetish

Some fine guitar playing from Pierre Bensusan is finish off the show. He was accompanied on this track by Didier Malherbe who is probably best know for being a member of space rock band Gong back in the 1970s when they released such classic albums as 'Camembert Electrique' and 'Flying Teapot'. Fetish is from Bensusan's 2009 compilation cd 'A La Carte'.
